Tom started Karate in 1996 with his brother Alex, under the instruction of Sensei Lawrie Turner (2nd Dan) in the SKKIF club Tai Ki Kai. Later on also with Tai Ki Kai's adult class headed by Sensei Mandy Priest (4th Dan). Sadly due to lack of members, Tai Ki Kai died in late 2004. The surviving members of the club joined the newly affiliated Yama Kai club. He achieved his Shodan with Yama Kai in March 2006 under Sensei Kanazawa (10th Dan).
